To: New York Governor George Pataki Dear Gov. Pataki: The residents of East Harlem are not only alarmed but outraged that the MTA is currently constructing the largest bus depot in NYC in our neighborhood, which is zoned R7 for residential and small commercial businesses. However great may be the need to park NYC's buses, the life and health of the people must come first. East Harlem has the highest rate of asthma in the USA, while the adjoining Upper East Side has the highest breast cancer rate. The diesel particulates that will belch forth form the exhaust of these buses will harm the health of the local population. Diesel fumes not only aggravate asthma, but their particulates are also know to cause breast and lung cancer. The AMA has published a study that found that people who breathed in diesel particulates had a higher rate of getting lung cancer. The people of East Harlem are rightly concerned about their health, since the bus depot is mere feet from their apartments. We know that you have expressed a great deal of concern through Senator Olga Mendez for the residents of East Harlem. We ask you now to intervene in this project and stop the opening of this bus terminal. Sincerely, The Undersigned

| marlene s. Colgate | 220 East 95 Street | NY | NY | 10128 | The dispersal of toxic particulate matter from this proposed new diesel BUS garage, FIVE TIMES LARGER and TALLER than what was there before, will contaminate an enormous area, including Central Park, the Upper East Side,(Community District 8), upper Harlem (District 11), as well as the immediate surrounding area (District 10). Since Harlem, in which three quarters of the current bus sites are located, ALREADY has the highest asthma rate in the nation, this proposed new garage is TOTALLY INACCEPTABLE and MUST BE BLOCKED. |

| Raymond - Plumey | Presently, I am the only locally-based Latino architect, preservationist and city planner in the East Harlem area, both a resident and a businessperson. In the event Federal funds were used on this Bus Depot project, then the project is in clear violation of Executive Order No. 12898, issued by President Bill Clinton on February 11, 1994, which states:...each Federal agency shall make achieving environmental justice part of its mission by identifying and addressing, as appropriate, disproportionately high and adverse human health or environmental effects of its programs, policies and activities on minority populations and low-income populations... | ||||

| Michael Merano | Brooklyn | NY | 11218 | There are enough threatening pollutants in our air, so why must the neighborhood of East Harlem be subject to further toxins. The downtown bus terminal is on the Hudson River away from neighborhoods, so why can't the uptown station be more secluded or at least more neighborhood friendly. | |

| Vanessa Butkus | I may not be a resident of the area, but the motives for building this bus barn are incomprehensible to me. Within the next several years we are supposed to meet the requirements of the Kyoto Report how will that happen if we allow a trend like this to happen. There are plenty of alternative tranportations out there why wont the city or the Transit see that and promote that. Allowing the city to keep on with this project is aking for other countries to get pisssed off at us. With things like this bus barn going up we will never be able to the Kyoto report standards which is mandatory. | ||||

| Patrice Dara Hall | There is already too much pollution in upper Manhattan, this bus depot will just add more pollution and health problems for the residents of East Harlem. I am concerned because the pollutants are airbourne and will eventually reach the Bronx where there are also high numbers of asthma patients. The MTA is showing lack of concern for the people who ride their subways and buses and pay good money to do so. | ||||
| ANTONIO BAERGA | 2057 PROSPECT AVE | BRONX | NY | 10457 | GROWING UP IN LEXINGTON HOUSES WHERE MY PARENT STILL RESIDE BRING MANY MEMORIES. THE BUS DEPOT WAS 3 STORIES HIGH, SO THE VIEW WAS FABULOUS. WE COULD SEE THE TAINO TOWERS, THE LIGHT FROM YANKEES STADIUM, THE BRIDGES AT NIGHT, AND ALL THE BEAUTIFUL DECORATION DURING THE HOLIDAYS. BUT THIS MAMOUTH BUILDING THAT IS MORE THAT 11 STORIES HAS TAKEN ALL THAT AWAY. THE MTA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT OUR HEALTH OR WELL BEING, THEY HAVE AFFECTED THE DAILY LIFE OF THE ELDERS AND THE NEW GENERATION IN THIS COMMUNITY. BLACKS AND HISPANICS ARE STILL TREATED AS SECOND HAND CITIZEN EVEN IF BLACK AND HISPANIC ARE PRODUCTIVE IN EVERYTHING THEY DO. I BELIEVE THAT OUR ENVIROMENT WILL BE AFFECTED IN A DEADLY WAY. THERE WILL BE MORE CASES OF SEVERE ASTHMA, BIRTH DEFECTS, LUNG DISEASE AND OTHER ILLNESS AS A RESULT OF THE FUMES THAT THIS BUS DEPOT WILL SPREAD INTO THE AIR. LET STOP THIS PROJECT NOW AND LET'S START THIKING ABOUTE FUTURE OF OUR PEOPLE |
